Ingo Swan on Skeptics
"True skepticism does not begin by being anti-anything. The processes of open consideration and examination (i.e., research) will ultimately establish whether something exists or not." This decade-old article written by Ingo Swann and circulated on the web remains apropos: Remote Viewing vs Its Skeptics by Ingo Swann
James Randi's $1 Million Paranormal Challenge
Beware Pseudo-Skepticism
Click Here for an interesting reveal of Randi and company's methods for dealing with individuals with valid questions.
On January 29th, 2005, we were talking about the James Randi $1 Million Paranormal Challenge in the chat room. If you don't know what the Challenge is, the short version is that this ex-magician, James Randi, is willing to give a million dollars to anyone who can prove something paranormal. It's common for people to ask us why we don't take the Challenge with all the stuff we talk about on PsiPog. Clearly we qualify for the paranormal, and it would seem like easy money. While talking in the chat room, annie made the observation that the prize was in the form of bonds, and not cash. She tried to explain to me how bonds can be "worth" a million dollars legally, but in reality could be completely worthless.
So I decided to do some research on what might be going on. I had thought about taking the Challenge, and I know some of my friends have thought about it too... million bucks seems pretty sweet. But I've heard of stories about how Randi is dishonest, and it's all a scam. Either way, I figured researching would be the best way to figure out what the deal was.
Ancient Arts Return to the Forefront of Society
From South London a survey reveals Seven out of 10 people questioned could name a paranormal expert, compared with one in 10 who could name a nationally acclaimed doctor.
United States: Survey Reveals "a surprising level of paranormal belief"
The authors of the Baylor Religion Survey’s (BRS) American Piety in the 21st Century have found “a surprising level of paranormal belief and experience in the United States, although those beliefs and experiences tend to be confined to people outside traditional religion”.
The BRS claims to have carried out the most extensive and sensitive study of religion ever conducted – in 2005 – and the full report will not be available until June next year. But its initial findings have been released, revealing that three-quarters of the population (74.5%) believe that some alternative treatments are at least as effective as traditional medicine half the population (52%) believe dreams can sometimes foretell the future a quarter of the population believe UFOs are probably spaceships from other worlds.
Biologist Rupert Sheldrake Takes On Richard Dawkins
PR.COM Press Release
In-depth interview with noted biologist Rupert Sheldrake explores how controversial science is debated.
Del Mar, CA, January 22, 2007 --(PR.COM)-- Join host Alex Tsakiris when he interviews biologist Dr. Rupert Sheldrake of Trinity College, Cambridge about telepathy research, ‘neo-Darwinism’, and how controversial science is debated.
During the hour-long interview Sheldrake responds to the comments of evolutionary biologist Dr. Richard Dawkins, of Oxford University.
“I’d say my view is very close to Darwin. Richard Dawkins’ view, oddly enough, isn’t very Darwinian, it’s ‘neo-Darwinian’. What makes it different is the denial that there can be any kind of memory or spontaneous creativity in species,” Sheldrake states.
Sheldrake also discusses the state of telepathy and parapsychology research.
“I think the scientific community has a diversity of opinions regarding telepathy. Many scientists are open-minded to the idea, partly because they’ve had these experiences themselves. But, there are a group of scientists and non-scientists who are adamantly opposed to the idea, not because they’ve studied the evidence, but because they haven’t,” says Sheldrake.
